Funchal is a beautiful city with plenty to do and to see as part of your holiday, but if you have time, you will see some really magical places if you take a tour or two of the island.  As well as enjoying the small towns and villages you're headed for, the journeys there and back will allow you to see Madeira's terraces (farming plots cut into the steep mountainside to make the most of the fertile soil), the sea from many viewpoints... quite often at altitude, and the valleys, waterfalls and forests that make Madeira Island unique.
